The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) removes the black soot from the exhaust. That soot builds up, and needs to be burnt off. Extra fuel is added to the exhaust to get the DPF hot, clearing it out. The diesel exhaust fluid (“cow piss”) is used in a different part of the exhaust system, the SCR.

The 200 mile shutdown is initiated rather that something that can be dealt with in a reasonable time period.
